This section provides information on unemployment benefits, medical insurance, low-cost to free wi-fi, and resources for undocumented individuals and immigrants. Expertise is provided by William Martinez, PhD; Samantha Schilf, and Elena Fromer.
Resources for low-income families and individuals
Insurance
- Unemployment insurance benefits: If your employer has reduced your hours or lost your job, you can file an unemployment insurance claim. If you’re unable to work because you are caring for an ill family member you can file a paid family leave claim.
- Qualifying for Medi-Cal coverage
- Qualifying for Covered California coverage
Free or low-cost internet service
- Xfinity: Comcast’s internet essential low-cost service program provides $9.95/month with 50Mbps.
- AT&T: Offers low-cost Wi-Fi starting at $30/month with up to 100Mbps.
- Connect All offers reduced-cost computers and electronics equipment for nonprofit organizations and people who meet certain low-income criteria.
- T-Mobile’s Project 10Million program for students: Free program for students or school districts with students who are eligible for the National School Lunch Program (ex. SNAP, Head Start, foster youth, etc.) grades K-12.
California and Bay Area resources
- San Francisco hand washing stations map: Free locations open to the public for hygiene purposes.
- San Francisco free meals for students: SFUSD is providing free breakfast, lunch, supper, fresh fruit, vegetables and milk to all children 18 and younger at 19 pick-up sites, Monday through Friday. No identification or proof of school enrollment is required, but a child must be present.
- San Francisco Department of Children Youth & Their Families: Provides the youth with basic nutritional needs (afterschool and summertime).
- BenefitsCal: CalFresh is a Federal Assistance Program for families to get access to healthy foods.
- Women, Infants, & Children (WIC): WIC is a federal assistance program focused on nutritional needs for women and children.
- ChildCare: Provides free tools and resources to connect with childcare programs in California.
- Marin Health & Human Services Meals on Wheels: Provides home delivered meal service for seniors within Marin County. There is no income limit.
- San Francisco Meals on Wheels: Provides home delivered meal services for seniors in the San Francisco area.
- Alameda County Meals on Wheels: Provides home delivered meal services for seniors in Alameda County.
- Freedom Community Clinic: Prioritizes western medicine and holistic healing as a whole for Black, Brown, Native, and Immigrant communities.
Financial resources
- CA Department of Community Services and Development (CSD): The CSD provides services and programs to low-income communities achieving and maintain economic security.
- Public Utilities Commission: Financial Assistance, Savings and Discounts for electrical, gas, telecommunication, or water utility bill.
- SF Human Services Agency: Supports the SF low-income community with financial assistance, food assistance, employment and more.
- Basic Fund: Financial assistance in the Bay Area with schooling, health services, and more for low-income families.
- Spark Point Program: Works with low-income families to meet basic needs (financial, food, housing) in the Bay Area.
- Marin Health & Human Services: Provides financial resources and programs for low-income families in Marin County.
- County of San Mateo Human Services: Financial assistance for all ages with low or no income through multiple publicly funded programs.
Resources for undocumented/immigrant individuals
- Resources for immigrant communities: Includes general information, legal assistance, and more.
- California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation (CRLAF): Statewide non-profit civil legal aid organization providing free legal services and more.
- San Francisco Rapid Response Network: A system implemented to report ICE activity. They are offering accompaniment only for those going to criminal court hearings. Hotline number: (415) 200-1548.
- SF Human Services Agency: Immigrants can get free help applying for public benefits and legal assistance from community organizations in SF.
- Legal Aid at Work: Free legal services and programs that advocate for employment laws and systems that empower low-income workers and marginalized communities.
- UndocuFund: Sonoma County’s natural disaster relief resource for undocumented members.
- Immigrants Rising: Assists with educational access and opportunities for undocumented people.
- Catholic Charities: Located in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin – Provides assistance and programs for all ages in immigration, housing, and more.
