Frequently asked questions
The HR staff supporting you during your leave of absence have different roles and responsibilities. Similar to when you go to the doctor’s office, each individual has a specialty focus as part of your care.
For this reason, while Disability Management Services (DMS) is engaged in the interactive process with you, you also will work with your academic HR leave specialist: Find your HR Rep
Academic HR Shared Services continues to advise on:
- Recording vacation leave balances in the HBS timekeeping system, should you wish to use these to cover your leave of absence
- Eligibility for Family and Medical Leave (FML) when a leave crosses a new calendar year
- FML provides 12 workweeks of unpaid job and benefit-protected leave per calendar year
- Disability pay options (see below)
- Return to work requirements
- Leave of absence coding in UCPath
If you have questions pertaining to your workers’ compensation claim, consult your claim’s examiner at Sedgwick on any benefits payable and authorizations for medical treatment.
You also may contact your Disability Management Services analyst for guidance.
Academic HR Shared Services will advise you on your disability benefit options:
- Extended Illness under the Health Science Compensation plan
- Lincoln Financial Group disability benefits: Lincoln provides wage loss for ‘x’ earnings and has a 14 (calendar) day waiting period
- Other long-term disability benefit options on the ‘y’ earnings
Disability Management Services and Academic HR Shared Services will work together to advise you on the workers’ compensation payroll process. This process is complicated and may involve the integration of varied pay sources in addition to the temporary disability (TD) payments from Sedgwick, our workers’ compensation third-party administrator (TPA).
For example, the following may be used to supplement workers’ compensation TD benefits:
- Extended illness under the Health Science Compensation Plan (HSCP)
- How these benefits are applied to your leave vary per any guidelines outlined in the HSCP and the monies payable (e.g. ‘x’ or ‘x + y’ earnings)
- Vacation leave balances
- Lincoln Financial Group disability benefits
- Other long-term disability benefit options on the ‘y’ earnings
- Questions about the UC statement for the Disability Management Services (LFG) claim should be directed to UCPath. Completion of the employer statement by UC Path is essential to processing the claim. The statement includes last day worked, your pay status, and other pertinent information.
- Your claim with LFG is considered a private claim and therefore you apply directly via the Lincoln Financial Group portal.
Confer with your academic leave specialist and your benefits representative: Find your HR Rep.
Your contact regarding personal payments for benefits is UCPath. UCPath is responsible for sending your benefits billing letter, to outline any costs associated with maintaining benefits.
