Biography

Tina Xinru Wang — Asian woman with black hair and patterned jacket

Tina Xinru Wang, PsyD, MA, is a postdoctoral fellow with the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program at UCSF. She earned her master's and Doctor of Psychology degrees in clinical psychology at William James College (previously known as MSPP), Massachusetts. There, she obtained specialization in Asian mental health as well as experience working with underserved populations from a wide range of settings. She began her clinical training journey working with adolescents, adults and elders at local healthcare clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her practicum training at the state hospital allowed her to deepen her understanding of the holistic approaches to psychological distress that often are comorbid with chronic pain, physical illnesses, grief and losses. She finished her doctoral training by providing comprehensive psychological assessments at the State-Level Regional Centers as well as supporting individual, family and group therapies at the psychiatric residency program.

Dr. Wang is passionate about providing spaces for the unheard voice. As a child of an immigrant herself, Dr. Wang values one’s cultural, familial and spiritual connections as essential to therapeutic healing. In sessions, she incorporates evidence-based strategies of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), while the core of her therapy often lies with psychodynamic and sociocultural lenses. Dr. Wang is fluent in English, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. She is devoted to opening the door to culturally sensitive mental health services, focusing on ensuring support is accessible to all.

In addition to her dedication to providing client care, Dr. Wang considers herself an artist and a family person. One of her life goals is to create accessible art for children, adults, and families in support of the destigmatization of and education around mental health topics. During her free time, Dr. Wang enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as her poodles.
