Biography
Sierra Garthwaite is a postdoctoral fellow with the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. She obtained her doctoral and master’s degrees (PsyD, MA) in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) in San Francisco and a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley where she was a Dean’s Honors List student and NCAA Division 1 athlete.
Having worked for many years in various mental health settings throughout the Bay Area and out of state, Dr. Garthwaite has extensive knowledge of resources in the community. She has facilitated a wide range of evidence-based coping skills groups at Kaiser Permanente including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for depression and CBT-I for insomnia. She has also co-led Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness coping skills groups. She enjoys utilizing these experiences to support individual clients in managing various presenting concerns including depression, anxiety and interpersonal difficulties.
Dr. Garthwaite’s therapeutic style is warm and integrative, combining a holistic approach with evidence-based approaches that are tailored to each client’s presenting concerns, personal history and individual strengths. She is passionate about providing a safe space where individuals feel heard, seen, and empowered. Dr. Garthwaite highly values diversity and is an avid explorer. She studied abroad in Paris, France and lived at a Zen Buddhist Center in New Mexico. She has also spent significant time in New Zealand, Colorado, and Thailand. In her free time, she enjoys photography, attending dance classes, and hiking.
