Shelley Patton, Director of Labor and Employee Relations (LER), will be retiring from UC on June 28 after nearly 25 years of service with the UC system including UCSF, UC Office of the President (UCOP) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). 

After working in the private sector, Shelley first began her UC career at LBNL in Labor and Employee Relations then moved to UCOP Labor Relations serving in many labor relations roles including as Director of Systemwide Labor Relations. In 2010 Shelley accepted the role of Director of Labor and Employee Relations for UCSF Health. In 2011, with the beginning of the centralization of Campus and Health Human Resources, Shelley assumed oversight of Campus Labor Employee Relations in addition to Health. 

Shelley has successfully led UCSF through many rounds of contract negotiations, including multiple labor actions, and has led her team through some of the most complicated situations faced at UCSF. She has also developed and promoted from within her team all three of her current LER managers, as well as her successor. 

Aviva Roller is returning to UCSF and will be serving as the new Director of Labor and Employee Relations following a national search. Aviva was part of UCSF’s LER team, under Shelley’s direction, from 2015-2021 before becoming the Director of Academic Labor and Employee Relations for UC Systemwide with the Office of the President. Prior to joining UCSF, Aviva was a practicing attorney with almost 10 years of experience in employment law. 

Aviva brings a strong background and understanding of the labor and employee relations landscape at UCSF, as well as an immense amount of experience with academic labor and employee relations, particularly with the recent ratifications of the UAW contracts and the current implementation. She also has a very strong understanding of the systemwide, Regental and Legislative impacts on the labor situation at UC, and has built strong relationships at UCOP as well as across the system. 

Aviva will begin her role on June 20, allowing for a brief overlap with Shelley to facilitate a smooth transition.
