An Innovative Approach to COVID-19 Vaccination

Bivalent booster compliance among UCSF employees increased significantly after the effort.

UCSF’s employee COVID-19 bivalent booster compliance rate increased dramatically by utilizing an innovative and creative approach.

Beginning in January, a series of vaccine pop-ups and rover teams provided services weekly at Mt. Zion, Mission Bay and Parnassus. These teams administered vaccines, answered questions, assisted with COVID-19 vaccine declination form submission, and created awareness of the available services through peer-to-peer connections and site-specific temporary signage. Availability spanned multiple clinical shifts.

When these efforts started in January, employee bivalent booster compliance was less than 50%. By Feb. 9, compliance increased to 83%.

Direct communication to all employees at the specific locations was sent via building listservs one day prior to each event. Additionally, vaccine pop-ups were held at UCSF Emeryville sites and the Berkeley Outpatient Center to increase access to employees working at those locations.

The following teams contributed to make these efforts successful and established an effective model for employee vaccination initiatives going forward: Vaccine planning team, vaccine pop-up/rover team, pharmacy team, pharmacy student/preceptors and facilities (building listserv communications).
