Overview
Frequently asked questions related to employees who have received a layoff notice or MSP employees who have received either Notice of Termination or Notice of Intent to Terminate.
General
The notice period is required by UC policy and UC collective bargaining agreements and is the timeframe between the date you were noticed and your last day on pay status.
Looking for Other Work at UC/UCSF
The UCSF Talent Acquisition (TA) group will have information to share about opportunities within the UCSF community and can direct impacted employees to job openings at the other UC campuses. Outplacement services can help with opportunities outside of UC/UCSF.
Yes, you may apply to jobs at UCSF now and in the future.
Not at this time. The Talent Acquisition team will be reaching out to discuss any posted opportunities that may be of interest, and then can help you further highlight your experience in your application.
Benefits
Unfortunately no, not at this time.
If you live outside of California, consider looking into the Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance exchanges in your state.
Yes, you need to use all the fund before your insurance terminates. Your insurance will terminate on the last day of the month in which your last day on pay status falls.
We recommend contacting the Commuter benefits provider (Edenred) to discuss your options. You can call at 888-235-9223 or visit their website at https://login.commuterbenefits.com/.
Leave Balances
You will continue to accrue PTO/Extended Sick Leave or Vacation/Sick leave during your notice period.
Those hours will be paid out as regular pay and will not be deducted from your PTO/vacation balances.
Please reach out to your manager to ask they remove the vacation/PTO from your timecard.
Incentive Award Program (IAP)
Your manager will provide your score to HR and HR will enter the score on your behalf in the IAP system. Then, the form will be routed to your manager for approval.
Eligible employees will still receive IAP payments if they are on active pay status as of 6/30/25. Your notice letter will include your final day of active status. The payout will occur at the regular time, during November.
Your last day of employment is included in your notice letter. You are considered active throughout that date.
Eligible employees will receive the IAP payout in the month of November 2025, the exact pay date has not yet been determined. These payments will be processed as paper checks and sent to the home mailing address on file for you. If you need to confirm or update your home mailing address after you separate from UCSF, you will be able to update your home mailing address in the UCPath Former Employee Portal.
You will access the UCPath Former Employee Portal only after you separate from UCSF.
Payroll
If you are paid by direct deposit now, then your final check will also be paid by direct deposit.
Yes, if you are eligible for an increase, it will be reflected in your wages between the effective date of the increase and your separation date, as well as in any severance calculations.
Unused vacation and PTO or vacation time will be paid out at the time of your final check. Extended sick time or sick time are not paid out upon separation.
Your UCRP deductions (Pension or Savings choice) will continue. You can change for cancel any voluntary retirement deductions (DCP after-tax, 403b, and/or 457b) at any time through your Fidelity account. Go to myUCretirement.com or call Fidelity Retirement Services at 866-682-7787.
Severance
If you are eligible, your notice letter will include information about your severance.
It depends on when you start the new role. If it's before your separation date, then you would not be paid severance.
If you are reemployed within UC after your separation date you may need to repay a portion of your severance. For example, if you are eligible for 10 weeks of severance and you are reemployed effective 5 weeks after your separation date, you may be required to repay 5 weeks of severance.
Yes.
Unemployment
You may still be eligible for unemployment. We recommend reaching to both California Employment Development Department (CA EDD) as well as your local state unemployment agency.
Check with the EDD website for more information, but generally, it is your last day on pay status with UCSF.
Retirement
You must retire within 120 days of separating, at which point your sick leave or ESL will automatically convert to service credit.
You need 5 years of UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) service credit to be vested. Please log into your UCRAYS account to view your UCRP service credit. If you are vested (5 years of UCRP service credit or more) you are eligible for retirement once you reach the minimum age depending on your retirement tier (age 50 or 55).
If you keep your UC Retirement Plan within the plan, you will retain your UC Retirement Plan service credit. This means that if you are rehired in a retirement-eligible position at UC, you will continue earning service credit in addition to what you’ve already earned.
If you request a distribution/rollover of your UCRP contributions you will forfeit the earned service credit. If rehired in a retirement-eligible position within UC after receiving a distribution, you will earn service credit like a new employee.
If you request a distribution/rollover of your UCRP contributions (Retirement Refund), you will lose your UCRP service credit. Not everyone has a CAP, but if you take your CAP and not your UCRP contributions you do not lose your service credit.
If you are vested (5 years of service credit or more) you would want to explore retirement rather than a distribution/refund. Please contact RASC if you have any questions at 1-800-888-8267.
There is no deadline to make a decision.
UCPath
Yes.
For people whose IT access was discontinued after receiving their notice, IT will re-establish a new connection to UCPath with your personal email address. You will receive an email at your personal email address from UCSF IT with a link to activate your connection to UCPath using your personal email address. This will support your ability to access UCPath throughout your notice period.
Within a couple days from separating from the University, you will receive an email at your personal email account from UCSF. It will contain an activation link to the UCPath Former Employee Portal. You can access the job aid on accessing this portal for more guidance.
Other Questions
Please contact your manager, who will follow the pre-established procedure.
Please coordinate with your manager on this. In general, UCSF equipment should be returned once you stop actively working.
If you are not being asked to continue working during your notice period, then access to MyAccess will be discontinued.
No, you will not have access to MyTime. Your manager is responsible for ensuring the timecard is complete each pay period through your final day.
