UCSF Expands Anti-Racism Initiative to Support Continued Diversity in Hiring

Advancing Excellence in Staff Recruitment program broadens to include additional recruitment levels

Human Resources and the Office of Diversity have collaborated to expand a key pillar of the UCSF Anti-Racism Initiative — Diversity in Leadership.

Since its inception, the Advancing Excellence in Staff Recruitment (AESR) program has focused on standardizing the recruitment practices for searches at the Manager 3 level and above where data points toward significant racial underrepresentation. By implementing UCSF-wide process improvement and best practices to disrupt unconscious bias in our hiring and promotions processes, the intervention has resulted in favorable outcomes in our efforts to diversify leadership at the senior leadership level.

Given the progress to date and the goal of the AESR program to impact all management levels, this program will now broaden to include recruitments at the Manager 2 level (most commonly Director-level roles). With this expansion, Equity Advisors, who provide stewardship of upper management recruitments by working with hiring managers, training search committees, and monitoring search processes to ensure that excellence, equity, and diversity are considered in all aspects of the recruitment and hiring process, will now work to ensure standard work at Manager 2 level searches.

Finally, to better support the addition of the Manager 2 level recruitments as part of the AESR program, the executive recruitment team within Talent Acquisition, led by Meri Scolari, has expanded. Todd Beeson has transferred to the executive recruitment team as an executive talent acquisition partner supporting Campus and Health Manager 2 recruitments.
