Pay for Family Care and Bonding Income Replacement Increase

UCOP has expanded the program beginning in 2023, increasing the income replacement from 70% to 100% for eight workweeks.

UCOP has expanded the Pay for Family Care and Bonding program (PFCB), increasing the income replacement from 70% to 100% of eligible earnings for up to eight workweeks per calendar year.

The changes go into effect with the pay period that starts on Jan. 1, 2023, for employees paid monthly and with the pay period that starts on Dec. 25, 2022, for employees paid biweekly. The increase will be available for qualifying leaves starting in 2022 and bridging to 2023, as well as for qualifying leaves beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2023.

PFCB is available for employees during an approved Family and Medical Leave taken for a qualifying reason.

Employees currently on leave or planning to take leave should contact their HR LOA representatives. For Campus, you may find your LOA representatives on the HR website using "Find My HR Rep." For Health, you may reach out to the Leaves team at [email protected].

Leaves that are eligible for PFCB

Rules for eligibility for PFCB aren’t changing. PFCB continues to be available for Family and Medical Leaves taken in a block of one workweek or more for the following qualifying reasons:

  • Caring for a family member with a serious health condition
  • Bonding with a new child
  • Military Caregiver Leave
  • Qualifying Exigency Leave

As a reminder, PFCB is not available for use towards FML taken for an employee’s own serious health condition or pregnancy disability.

While an employee is receiving PFCB, UC will continue to cover its share of premium costs for health and welfare benefits. Employees cannot use any paid leave accruals (such as sick leave, vacation or PTO) while they are being paid through PFCB.
