Changes to Rehired Retiree Benefit Eligibility Policy

Upcoming changes align with federal regulations.

Beginning July 1, 2025, benefits eligibility rules for rehired retirees are changing to align with federal regulations.

  • If an employee returns to UC employment as a rehired retiree within 6 months of retirement, most rehired retirees will be eligible for the Faculty/Staff Mid-level benefits package
  • Currently employed rehired retirees are subject to these new rules and may be eligible for Mid-level benefits if their appointment is renewed and/or changed on or after July 1, 2025.
  • All rehired retirees eligible for UC employee benefits will be required to suspend their UC retiree medical plan enrollment at the time they become eligible for UC employee benefits.
  • All rehired retirees eligible for UC retiree health benefits may return to UC retiree health insurance coverage when their recall position ends and/or are no longer eligible for employee health insurance.
  • Rehired retirees will be assigned to a Composite Benefits Rates group based on employee class, benefits eligibility, and in a few instances, job code. For questions about Composite Benefits Rates, please contact the Budget & Resource Management department at: [email protected].
