Registered Nurse Training Programs - Not published

As a premier academic medical center, UCSF Health is dedicated to supporting new nurses who are entering practice as well as experienced nurses who are changing specialty areas.

Throughout the year we offer programs especially designed for these transitions and new programs are posted on our career website.

A variety of teaching methods are used to enhance the learning experience including didactic instruction, group discussions, skills laboratories, simulation, precepted clinical experiences, competency-based orientation, and online learning.

The Center for Nursing Excellence and Innovation, in conjunction with participating units and HR, provides several training programs to facilitate Nursing professional development. Program types may include:

New Nurse Residency Training Program (NNRTP)

The New Nurse Residency Training Program (RN Residency Program) is designed for newly and soon to be graduated RNs who have or will have graduated on or after December 2020 with an ASN, BSN or MSN Degree.

Candidates selected for the RN Residency Program will be classified as a Clinical Nurse 1 and must have less than six months of RN employment experience at the time of the program start date.

You will be expected to commit to at least two years of full-time employment on the hiring unit after the completion of training.

All applicants MUST have either a temporary CA RN license or an active CA RN license by March 4, 2022.

If you meet these requirements, when prompted please answer "yes" to questions regarding graduation dates and degrees.

The application period will be from Saturday, January 8, 2022 – Saturday, January 15, 2022, 8:00PM Pacific Time.

The Spring 2022 NNTRP interviews will be held from late January to early February. The program starts with orientation on Monday, April 4, 2022.

Re-Entry Training Program (RETP)

The Re-Entry Training Program (RETP) is designed for experienced registered nurses who are transitioning into a practice area and who lack the current clinical experience necessary or knowledge and skills of the new practice area to which they are transitioning without the support of this training program.

The RETP is comprised of a rigorous schedule that features didactic instruction interspersed with clinical precepted time. The overall goal is to provide a structured series of learning experiences coupled with precepted time to support the transition of experienced registered nurses as they re-launch their clinical careers at UCSF Health.

The 2022 RETP application period is Saturday, January 8, 2022 – Saturday, January 15, 2022. Interviews will be held from late January to early February. The program starts with orientation on Monday, April 4, 2022.

Career Development Training Program (CDTP)

The CDTP is designed to facilitate professional growth and new career opportunities for UCSF Health registered nurses who desire to transition from their current practice area to another practice area. Our overall goal is to provide a structure that will support our internal UCSF nurses and provide them with additional career mobility.

The next CDTP schedule is to be determined.

External Experienced Training Program (EETP)

The EETP is designed to facilitate professional growth and new career opportunities for external experienced registered nurses who desire to transition into UCSF Health to work in a new practice area for which they lack the hiring qualifications for that practice area without the support of this training program. Our overall goal is to provide a structure that will support our external experienced nurses and provide them with additional career mobility.

The next EETP schedule is to be determined.
