Knowledge Bank: Benefits Orientation and Enrollment for a New Employee (Faculty/Staff)

UC’s Health & Welfare and Retirement benefits are an important part of an employee’s total compensation package. Benefits orientation is intended to empower employees newly eligible for UC benefits to make informed decisions regarding their benefits options.
Generally, benefits fall into categories designed to foster:
- Protection against catastrophic expenses (through various health insurances such as medical, dental, and vision)
- Income protection in the event of death or disability (through benefits such as life insurance and disability insurance)
- Financial security for the future (through a mandatory retirement plan and optional savings plans)
- Employee morale (through programs such as the UC Living Well wellness program)
Estimated time to complete action, aligned with campus SPA turnaround times when applicable, and factors that may affect timing.
Employees newly eligible for benefits must enroll within their 31-day Period of Initial Eligibility (PIE).
