On November 8, 2019, the UAW ratified the first-ever agreement for the new Academic Researchers bargaining unit, which covers employees in the Specialist and Professional Researcher series. The agreement will run through September 30, 2022.

Highlights of the agreement include:

  • Compensation: Across the board increase effective January 1, 2020 of 4% for Specialists and 4.5% for Professional Researchers. Future increases of 3% effective July 1, 2020, July 1, 2021, and July 1, 2022.
    • Additional equity and “smoothing” of ranges for selected Specialist ranks/steps.
  • Longer-term appointments: initial appointments for one year through the first merit cycle. Further appointments will be 2 or 3 years, depending on rank and step.
  • Joint labor-management committees established to explore future opportunities for bridge funding for principal investigators and paid parental leave.

Academic HR and Labor and Employee Relations will hold two management trainings to discuss the new contract provisions. The training content will be the same on both dates. Advance registration is not required.

Training Audience: You are encouraged to participate if you supervise Specialists or Professional Researchers, or if you have administrative oversight for these employees.
