The UCSF HR Employee Recognition Program Selection Committee is pleased to announce the HR Employee of the Month Award recipients for September 2017, Jorge Martinez and Laurie Rojas! Congratulations to them both! In addition to recognition, they will each receive a certificate and $50 gift card.

Name: Jorge Martinez
Job Title: Academic HR Generalist
HR Team/Work Unit: Academic Shared Services

Why Nominated:
“I am writing as new faculty in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at UCSF. I wanted to let you know what a wonderful job Mr. Jorge Martinez did with my appointment and hiring and also the hiring of three of my lab members. This move was complicated and stressful since it involved the move of my entire lab at the same time, with short time constraints. Mr. Martinez was so helpful, kind, and knowledgeable in the entire process from start to finish. This was critical for us since we were unfamiliar with the UC system and navigating the process was not so straight forward! He also helped me tremendously with non-HR related questions and assisted me in brain storming ways to navigate the UCSF system. My lab members, Dr. Alpa Mahuvakar, Dr. Stuart Gibb, and Dr. Daniel Potter, all faculty hires, feel the same way about the exemplary assistance provided by Mr. Martinez. He is extremely pleasant to interact with, very kind, and highly accommodating. He made a stressful process so much easier for us! He truly did an outstanding job and I am very grateful for all the assistance and support he provided. I just wanted to send you this note and would like to nominate him for commendation for his outstanding job with my group this summer.”

What does Jorge enjoy doing outside of work?
“I enjoy my free time and am open to anything that may happen in it, but one of the activities I continue to enjoy most is singing. I continue taking voice lessons, and in fact I have reached out to a choral group and other volunteering opportunities that would allow me to share my love of song more publicly. Whenever I have the chance to sing in front of an audience now, I learn something through the experience and the music, which is making me realize a better version of myself each time.”

Name: Laurie Rojas
Job Title: Academic Affairs Specialist
HR Team/Work Unit: VPAA

Why Nominated:
“I am nominating Laurie Rojas for Employee of the Month for her outstanding customer service, being a great colleague, and her good work ethics. Recently, one of the other Academic Affairs Specialists has seen an increase in the academic hires within the departments that they manage. To help alleviate the mounting pressure and ensure that packets are reviewed/processed in a timely manner, Laurie graciously agreed to pitch in and help review/process other tasks that her colleague previously handled. In addition to Laurie's normal workload, she's taken on these additional responsibilities for the last several months and I thought now would be as good a time as any to recognize her for being such an amazing team player. Her willingness to lend a helping hand is a perfect example as to why Academic Affairs is such a tight-knit group and I'm proud to have her as a colleague!”

What does Laurie enjoy doing outside of work?
I love traveling, learning about different cultures, and eating good food!
