The UCSF HR Employee Recognition Program Selection Committee is pleased to announce the Employee of the Month Award recipients for May 2017, Jessica Cheng and Paty Vu! Congratulations to them both! In addition to recognition, they will each receive a certificate and $50 Visa gift card.

Name: Jessica Cheng
Job Title: Academic HR Generalist
HR Team/Work Unit: Academic Shared Services

Why Nominated:
“Jessica is an exceptional HR Generalist to her client departments and coworkers. On top of her normal generalist work, she also has a specialized role – the leave of absence coordinator for our team. She is committed to providing good customer service and would go above and beyond to meet the needs of her clients. She would stay late to ensure FMLA packets are issued to the employees within 24 hours of request, and she would respond to complex telephone inquiries related to leaves of absence but she patiently discusses their benefits and payroll options. Employees who are seriously ill, injured, and/or caring for sick family members are often confused, needy, and don’t understand the different policies and procedures, but she patiently guides them and really dedicates her time until they understand. If the caller is more comfortable in speaking in their native language, Jessica finds a coworker who could translate for her.”

“Each year, there is an annual process that takes place over the course of three months. I have had the pleasure working with Jessica every time, and each time Jessica constantly delivers the utmost and outstanding customer service experience. She is extremely knowledgeable, efficient, and responsive. There was not a time where she would hesitate to help out on last-minute tasks! In addition, she is very patient and understands the needs of each person she communicates with.”

What does Jessica enjoy doing outside of work?
“Outside of work I enjoy discovering new restaurants in the city and wandering around different neighborhoods to see the different things they have to offer. I also enjoy hiking and nature. We have so many beautiful trails in the city and around the bay!”

Name: Paty Vu
Job Title: Postdoc HR Generalist
HR Team/Work Unit: Postdoc Shared Services

Why Nominated:
“Paty Vu has always been extremely helpful with our department as our postdoc generalist. I constantly submit tickets and have unusual questions for Paty and if she does not have the answer she always follows up with me in a timely manner with the answer.

Most recently, Paty has been meeting with me 1:1 weekly or biweekly so that we can make sure that we have all of our postdocs hired and renewed while I am out on maternity leave. I personally find the 1:1 meetings helpful because we can sit in front of each other and touch every postdoc’s appointment and discuss the multiple situations they have. Before the meeting is over, we have a list of items that we both need to work on and prioritize before the next meeting. Paty has gone above and beyond to help me make sure that Neurosurgery is taken care of while I am out on leave.

Paty is a hard worker and a great asset to the Department of Neurosurgery!”

What does Paty enjoy doing outside of work?
“I enjoy going out when the weather is nice, whether it’s going on a picnic, getting bloody marys with oysters, or just wandering the city. But also enjoy my lazy Sundays. I try to stay active by going on hikes or playing volleyball with my family and friends.”
