The UCSF HR Employee Recognition Program Selection Committee is pleased to announce this quarter’s Hero Highlight award recipients are Edmund Chang and Margery Lazarus! They are recognized for community service and volunteer work.

Name: Edmund Chang
Job Title: HR Academic Generalist
HR Team/Work Unit: Team B

Why Nominated:
“Earlier this year, Edmund Chang was a Hero Highlight recipient for his outstanding community work. Edmund became a mentor to high school and college students in an underserved community in Kunming City, Yunan Province of China. He continues to mentor these students remotely.

Edmund has continued to seek community outreach and volunteer work and should be awarded the Hero Highlight for his latest endeavor that will be tremendously impactful. Edmund is participating in a project to build environmental-friendly public restrooms in a farming village in China. This project will benefit ~3000 farmers in a village where toilets are currently inexistent. These toilets will not only help modernize this farming community, but more importantly, they will improve health and agriculture. He will be in China for two weeks helping with this project. Given his commitment to this community organization, he has also been asked to serve on their leadership board.

I don’t know anyone else more committed in and outside of work to building community and trying to help people. With that said, Edmund should be the first to be recognized for the Hero Highlight twice!”

What does Edmund enjoy doing outside of work?
“Outside of work, I like to spend time with friends and family. I am also a volunteer ESL teacher at my church. I teach immigrants on how to pass the citizenship interview.”

Name: Margery Lazarus
Job Title: HR Academic Generalist
HR Team/Work Unit: Team E

Why Nominated:
“I would like to nominate Margery Lazarus for the Hero Highlight Award. Margery has spent many of her weekends over the past several months organizing, and many times leading, group rafting trips for individuals who are HIV positive, as well as for kids who typically do not have opportunities to go on trips. She coordinates with various organizations (such as the Sierra Club) and working together they are able to provide a fun and safe environment for all. Thank you Margery for all that you do!”

What does Margery enjoy doing outside of work?
“In addition to spending time with my family, I enjoy sharing the outdoors with others – whitewater rafting, sea kayaking, backpacking and camping. I especially appreciate helping others to work past their fears while discovering their strengths. To do this, I’ve been training people to be whitewater guides, to read water for signs of current and entrapments, to glide a boat ever more gracefully through the rapids, and to encourage their team of paddlers to work together for a fun and safe trip. These outdoor adventures support these teams to know each other better and ‘paddle together’ so much more smoothly than when they started. Many times I’ve seen how these outdoor adventures give people the opportunity to change their lives, and build community at the same time.”
