The following are our development offerings from May–December 2016. Registration instructions and course details are included in the flyer related to each course. 

The Spring 2016 Campus Management Practices Series
The Campus Management Practices Series offers short sessions on a variety of topics designed to help you navigate certain campus-specific management responsibilities and learn key human resources policies and procedures. New supervisors and above are encouraged to complete this series in their first six months. Registration is open; you can register for each session separately.  

Leading the Frontline Series: July–September and October–December
This series is offered to current supervisors, frontline managers, or staff members who are targeted for promotion to a supervisor or management role within six months of the program. It develops core competencies essential for success in a frontline leadership role. Admittance to this program is by nomination and approval from your manager. Enrollment is not available through the UC Learning Center. 

Professional Staff Development (PSD), MayJune
This series is offered to non-supervisory staff. It focuses on core competencies that support their professional success, with an emphasis on communication, customer focus and problem-solving. Participants must sign up for all five sessions.

Managing Challenging Patient Behaviors: July 6, Sept. 9, and Nov. 4
This is an all-day session that provides a framework for understanding challenging patient behaviors and engaging patients with a balance of empathy and respectful limit setting. It offers best practices for addressing these behaviors, as well as the opportunity to do scenario-based role playing to practice responses to challenging patient behaviors. 

Accomplishing More with Less: June 3 (limited space)
This highly popular one-day workshop helps participants harness the power of organizational skills to deal with today’s most pressing workplace issues such as time management, prioritization, dealing with interruptions, email, calendars, and to-do lists, as well as organizing electronic and paper documents. 

Two Business Writing Essentials
Write Right!: June 6
This all-day workshop covers the foundation of business writing to make sure participants know current grammar rules and how to identify and correct errors. 
Get to the Point: June 15
This all-day workshop focuses on the crucial writing issues: purpose and audience. It will cover practical ways you can organize, format, and write a communication such as an email so the reader quickly gets the point and can act on it. 

Microsoft Excel Workshops
Microsoft Excel Beginner
Aug. 11, 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m.
This workshop is for users who are new to Microsoft Excel, or who have used Excel but only minimally, and would like to get a thorough understanding of Excel’s capabilities to help them leverage it more effectively in their work environment. 
Microsoft Excel Intermediate
July 15: 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1–4:30 p.m.
Aug. 11: 1–4:30 p.m.
Sept. 20: 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m.
This half-day workshop is for business users who are already familiar with Microsoft Excel and want to take their skills to the next level. Participants will learn powerful techniques that can help them save significant time, analyze data and extract important business insights, present information in a compelling way, and collaborate with others more effectively.  
Microsoft Excel Advanced
Sept. 20: 1–4:30 p.m.
In this half-day workshop you will learn the most powerful capabilities of Excel Pivot Tables and how they can be utilized to analyze your data and present your findings in compelling ways. 

New Leader Onboarding 2016 – Successful Transitions
New Leader Onboarding is offered every month to newly hired or promoted supervisors and managers who are new to supervising staff at UCSF. This interactive program offers:

  • An overview of UCSF culture and priorities 
  • Guidelines on how to develop a smooth and effective transition into your new role
  • An orientation to tools and resources available to you in your role as a manager 
  • A chance to network with peers at UCSF

Register through the UC Learning Center, using the search term "onboarding." The next session is offered on on June 20 from 1:304:30 p.m., at 3360 Geary Blvd., HR Training Room B, 3rd floor.

Online Learning Resource
An online resource was recently introduced to support learning and development for all staff and managers. It includes hundreds of free e-courses and videos on numerous topics, which are available to you online 24/hours a day.
