Last month, the HR benefits team sponsored the “Ticket to your UC Retirement” event at Mission Bay. More than 300 participants attended making the event a huge success while also underscoring the need employees have to understand the University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP).

The event, led by Kevin Ching, included local benefits counselors, Fidelity counselors, representatives from the Health Care Facilitator Program, and the Faculty & Staff Assistance Program.  One of the stars of the event was Robert Pepper, a Public Affairs Specialist from the local Social Security Office who shared his 35+ years of Social Security knowledge.

Here are some of the statements from employees who attended:

Claire Harmon in Anesthesia said, “I recommend this event as a must-attend for anyone who wants to proactively plan their retirement, no matter what career stage they’re in. It does a great job of presenting the individual retirement income components and laying out the issues to think about, while providing an opportunity to connect with key advisors.”

Leonor Patel in the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) said, “I’ve been so focused on my work for all of these years, I’ve never taken time to look into my retirement benefits, it was so nice to take some time for ‘me.’ The presentations were very clear and concise and I learned so much.”

Employees seeking retirement savings education may also want to take advantage of the free retirement education classes facilitated by Nancy Pargot, UCSF’s Fidelity partner, and/or request Nancy attend a department meeting to speak on a retirement savings topic.

If you are planning to retire anytime soon, be sure to contact the benefits office to schedule an appointment with your counselor within 90 days of your anticipated retirement date; go to the Considering Retirement page for more details and contact information.

Due to the overwhelming response to this event, the campus benefits office is planning to hold another event in the fall.
