A brief overview of the process to complete the action.

The need for workplace accommodations may arise for both temporary and permanent work restrictions. If an employee has medically based work restrictions that hinder the employee’s ability to perform the essential duties of his/her job, the University is obligated to explore whether the employer can provide reasonable accommodations to allow the employee to perform his/her essential job functions. In this way, the University can keep valued, experienced, and trained employees while complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA).

The interactive process is an ongoing dialogue between the employee and appropriate representatives of the University about possible options for reasonably accommodating the limitations/restrictions imposed by the employee’s health condition/disability.

UCSF values its employees and their contributions; therefore, we must provide them the opportunity to return to work at the earliest feasible and medically appropriate time.
